Poland: The 2nd Regional Conference of European National IHL Committees (NIHLC) in Warsaw
On 20-21 May, the ICRC Regional Delegations in Paris and Warsaw co-organized with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland and the Polish Red Cross the 2nd Regional Conference of European NIHLC. More than 110 participants from 30 States, mainly representing ministries of foreign affairs and defense, gathered to discuss how to achieve better implementation of IHL.
Building on the 2023 edition as well as on the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent held last year, the conference - through panels, presentations and working group discussions - focused on topics of priority for the region, including the IHL obligations to account for protected persons, the protection of the medical mission and humanitarian exemptions in sanction regimes. It also hosted, within the framework of the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to IHL, the European regional consultation for workstream 2 on national IHL committees.
