Singapore Management University Wins 20th Red Cross IHL Moot for Asia Pacific Region
The 20th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot for Asia-Pacific Region concluded on 13 March, 2022. The online competition was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) and Regional Delegation for East Asia of the ICRC, in collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was conducted through submission of memorials with virtual oral hearings.
A total of 24 teams from countries and regions across the Asia-Pacific participated in this year's competition, and more than 60 professionals from government, military, academia and international organizations in the region served as judges for the competition.
After five days' competition, Singapore Management University won the championship, outplaying the Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) in the final.
The University of Hong Kong was awarded the Best Prosecution Memorial while the Best Defence Memorial went to the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand). Dylan Jesse Andrian from Universitas Gadjah Mada won the honor of Best Mooter.
On the sidelines of the competition, the Seminar on Artificial Intelligence, Armed Conflict and Humanitarian Action was held online on March 12, moderated by Mr. Alex Fan Hoi Kit, Barrister-at-law and President of Hainan International Arbitration Court.
Speakers, including Dr. Alberto Ko, Director of Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative, Chen Dingding, Professor of International Relations at Jinan University and President of Intellisia Institute, and Clementine Rendle, ICRC Regional Legal Adviser in the Pacific, shared their views on the application of AI in humanitarian action, AI and international relations, as well as the ICRC's position regarding AI and machine learning.
