Results of the fifth Arabic writing competition
The International Committee of the Red Cross, Regional IHL department in Cairo, would like to thank all those who have shown interest in the activities that aim to support and promote understanding and dialogue on IHL by contributing to the fifth Arabic writing competition on "Climate change, Environment, and Armed Conflict".
After reviewing submitted research papers from ten Arab countries conducted by researchers, university professors, Ph.D., MA, and BA students, we are pleased to announce that the deliberations of the jury, consisting of three IHL experts, have resulted in the selection of the following researches to win the prizes:
The first prize:
Dr. Obaid Ali Al Salloum from Syria for his contribution "Contribution of IHL in addressing climate change".
The second prize:
Dr. Muhammad Ghazi Al-Janabi from Iraq for his contribution "Implications of the reciprocal effect of the relationship between climate change and armed conflict on the rules of IHL".
The third prize is awarded jointly to:
Dr. Salah Jubeir Al-Busaisi from Iraq for his contribution "Protection of water as an integral part of the natural environment during armed conflicts.
Ms. Hiba Jamal Ajoob from Syria for her contribution to "Armed conflicts, climate change and the role of IHL in protecting the environment".
Additionally, the ICRC is considering the possibility of publishing the winning research in one of its publications (book and/or magazine).
