Fiji: "Our World at War" photo exhibition opens

22-07-2009 News Release 09/146

Suva (ICRC) - A photo exhibition entitled "Our World at War" organized by the Fiji Red Cross Society and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) opens today at the Fiji Museum.

The photos on display draw attention to inspirational attempts by ordinary men and women, to limit human suffering in situations of war.

2009 is an important year for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It marks the 150th anniversary of the battle of Solferino (Italy, 24 June 1859) – where the idea of the Red Cross was born – the 90th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, which protect the people who do not take part in hostilities (civilians, humanitarian workers, medical teams, sick people, wounded soldiers, prisoners of war, etc.).

The Geneva Conventions have been ratified by all the countries of the world, including the 14 island States of the Pacific.

This exhibition, which will run until 21 August, is part of a worldwide campaign by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to remind everyone of their individual responsibility to lessen human suffering.
