Pakistan: ICRC still without news of missing Turkmen helicopter and crew

27-01-2006 News Release 06/4

A week has passed since an MI-8 helicopter operated by Turkmenistan Airlines and chartered by the International Committee of the Red Cross for its earthquake relief operations in Pakistan went missing after taking off from the Pakistani city of Peshawar for its home base in Turkmenabad, Turkmenistan.

So far, however, the massive search and rescue operations under way both on land and in the air in Afghanistan and Pakistan have failed to uncover any trace of the helicopter or its seven-man crew.

At present the search, involving national and international efforts, is focusing on an area to the south of the Afghan city of Jalalabad. The ICRC is maintaining close contact with all the authorities concerned, notably in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan. It is extremely concerned about the fate of the crew and wishes to express its solidarity with the families who are anxious for news.
