China: University of San Agustin garnered the championship in the 22nd IHL Moot Court for Asia-Pacific Region

IHL is the body of law which regulates the conduct of armed conflict to retain a degree of humanity even in the worst of wartime. The Red Cross Humanitarian Law Moot is organized every year to promote the knowledge and awareness of IHL among students in the Asia-Pacific region.

After four days of intense competition, the University of San Agustin from the Philippines claimed the coveted top prize, with Thammasat University from Thailand securing the runner-up position.

Tribhuvan University - Prithvi Narayan Campus (Nepal) was honored with the award for Best Memorial for Prosecutor, while the University of Adelaide (Australia) received recognition for Best Memorial for Defendant. Ms. Samantha Grajo from the University of San Agustin was honored Best Mooter of the Final Round, while Ms. Jessica March from the University of Adelaide won the title of Best Mooter of the General Rounds.

The competition drew participation from 22 teams representing diverse backgrounds and cultures across the Asia-Pacific region, converging in Hong Kong for the event. And approximately 50 experts from government, militaries, international organizations, academia, and the legal sector generously lent their time and expertise as judges.

It is important to note that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions which are the bedrock of international humanitarian law. Mr. Balthasar Staehelin, Head of ICRC Regional Delegation for East Asia appreciated the students for their active participation. 'I hope that each and every one of you will continue to contribute to the promotion of IHL in your own way. Whether it is through research, advocacy, education, or direct engagement in humanitarian activities, your efforts will be invaluable', said Staehelin. 'Together, let us encourage States to minimize the horrors of armed conflict and ensure that the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected and protected'.

The 22nd Red Cross IHL Moot Court Competition serves as a platform for young legal minds across the region to engage with pressing humanitarian issues and advocate for the protection of human dignity in times of conflict. Additionally, the competition reinforces the importance of upholding IHL to mitigate the human cost of war and ensure the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected and protected.
