Winners of third Arabic writing competition on 70th anniversary of Geneva Conventions

The ICRC Regional IHL department in Cairo would like to thank all those who have shown interest in the activities that aim to support and promote understanding and dialogue on IHL by contributing to the third Arabic writing competition on “The 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions of 1949”.

After reviewing 120 research papers from ten Arab countries conducted by university professors, MA, Ph.D., and BA students, and researchers, we are pleased to announce that the deliberations of the jury, consisting of three IHL experts, have resulted in the selection of the following researches to win the prizes:

The first prize is equally divided between

  • Salwa Yousef El-Akabi from Egypt for her research entitled “Compliance of Armed Groups with IHL: Its Foundation and Means of Promotion”
  • Mahmoud Al-Bazi from Syria for his research entitled “Non-state Armed Groups and their Compliance with IHL: Contemporary Challenges and Proposed Solutions”

The second prize is equally divided between

  • Amer Majed Al-Ajami from Syria for his research entitled “The Changing Nature of Non-International Armed Conflicts from an IHL Perspective”
  • Saed Lagoun from Algeria for his research entitled “Seventy Years of the 1949 Geneva Conventions: Priority of Implementation and Review Options”

Third prize is equally divided between

  • Salah Jabir Al-Busaisi from Iraq for his research entitled “Response of the 1949 Geneva Conventions to The Use of Artificial Intelligence Weapons Systems in Armed Conflicts”
  • Al-Ishash Ishaq from Algeria for his research entitled “Legal Review of the Lethal Autonomous Weapon System”

 

On the other hand, the ICRC is considering the possibility of publishing the winning researches in one of its publications (book and/or magazine)
