First Ever Virtual IHL Moot Court for Asia Pacific Region Concludes in Hong Kong

Hong Kong/Beijing (ICRC)-- The ICRC and Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) jointly organized the 19th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition for the Asia-Pacific Region through a virtual format for the first time on 11-14 March 2021.

A total of 26 teams from 24 cities across the Asia-Pacific region participated in this year's competition. Victoria University of Wellington from New Zealand won the championship, defeating University of Tokyo in the final round. Awards for the best written Memorials went to University of the Philippines (for Prosecutor) and National University of Taiwan (for Defendant).

The judges for the Moot Court Competition involved around 55 legal professionals, drawn from Hong Kong, mainland China and other countries and regions, including practicing lawyers, law professors, diplomats, government legal counsels, local & international judges and ICRC legal experts.

The Moot Court Competition in Hong Kong represents the culmination of a year of IHL study and moot court competitions for the participants. The Hong Kong Moot is the final step in a series of sub-regional, national and local rounds that took place in 2020, involving more than 1,000 students, professors, advocates, judges and other legal practitioners.
