First IHL Moot Court Competition in Armenia

The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC delegation in Yerevan on March 4 2005.
The first IHL moot court competition for law students took place in the resort town of Tsakhadzor (40 km from Yerevan) from 1 to 4 March 2005. The competition was organised by the ICRC and the Armenian Association of International Law (AAIL).
Four teams took part representing Yerevan State University , the Russian-Armenian Slavonic State University , "Mants " University and the Armenian branch of the Moscow New Legal Institute . Each team was comprised of one coach and three students.
The jury members were Professor Vladimir Hovhannisyan, Head of the AAIL, Garib Babayan, Head of the European and International Law Chair of the Slavonic University and Professor Xavier Philippe, Dr., Regional ICRC Legal Advisor, ICRC Regional Delegation in Moscow.
On the first day, participants were updated on ICRC activities both in Armenia and worldwide, as well as the contemporary challenges facing IHL. During the competition teams were given a practical task based on an invented armed conflict. Jury members were assigned different roles to evaluate the teams'responses.

The first prize went to Yerevan State University. Ms. Rosa Baghyan from "Mants" University was declared the best speaker of the competition.
