The ICRC in Côte d'Ivoire

Reestablishing family links is one of ICRC's priorities.
In the countries covered by the regional delegation established in 1992, the ICRC supports the authorities in implementing IHL, encourages the armed and security forces to respect IHL, and develops protection activities particularly in the field of detention and restoring family links. It also supports the institutional development of the region's National Societies. Since the outbreak of the crisis in Côte d'Ivoire in 2002, the ICRC's regional delegation in Abidjan has focused on maintaining and expanding its operational capacity to protect and assist people affected by the violence, visiting detention places and monitoring the situation countrywide. The ICRC coordinates its activities with the Red Cross Society of the Côte d'Ivoire.

Presence (2009): 256 staff, including 38 expatriates

Côte d'Ivoire: long-term development must replace emergency assistance
Claude-Alain Zappella, head of the ICRC’s delegation in Côte d'Ivoire, reviews the main aspects of the organization’s work in the country since the crisis began in 2002, and explains why its activities have changed direction in 2008. He believes that the emergency assistance phase is at an end. The ICRC is therefore encouraging the State and civilian society to assume their responsibilities once again now that the political and military situation has stabilized.

Côte d'Ivoire: clean tap water, despite everything
Since crisis erupted in 2002, the ICRC has been the only organization able to manage and maintain the water-supply system in northern Côte d’Ivoire which supplies water to over 1.5 million people. Now that peace has been restored, the private operator, SODECI, can take over once again. Iolanda Jaquemet reports on this operational success story, which has largely been the result of cooperation between the ICRC and the company's courageous employees.
